Set-top box portability could become fact by 2018

Few details about Set-top box

From next calendar year, people can turn their DTH (direct-to-home) companies and cable providers without changing their set-top box. This may be much like mobile number portability where users can change telecom companies while keeping their mobile number.

CDoT (Centre for Development of Telematics), under the Section of Telecommunications, has readied a prototype to showcase the technology for interoperability of set-top box.

“We had a meeting with CDoT within the last week of July in Bengaluru. CDoT is the firm which we’d engaged for creating a prototype and technology structures for interoperability of set-top box. They have got completed work typically to your satisfaction,” R S Sharma, chairman of Telecom Regulatory Power of India (Trai),
Trai has been focusing on this issue for quite a while now.

After building the prototype, we’ve to explore how to reproduce it and the way to copy technology for creation i.e., commercial use, he said.

“We will need all stakeholders under consideration. Piracy can be an important matter here, specifically for broadcasters. We will speak to them and create a clear understanding so that we now have no slots in the machine which is often jeopardized with,” the chairman said, adding cost is another big thought.

Presently, a set-top field costs Rs 1,700-2,200, with regards to the service provider. The total number is non-refundable. This high cost of a set-top package is the key reason people cannot change their service agency if indeed they have service issues.

“Broadly, the price must be significantly less than existing or even whether it’s the same price, it has portability benefit. People just like a product which includes the same price but with an extra benefit,” Sharma said.

Given that the technology is ready, Trai will first display its robustness to all or any stakeholders. Subsequently, the next phase will be cost and an appointment process where it’ll seek views of most before firming its suggestions on the problem.

The technology is very powerful and works proficiently, he said. The brand new technology will encapsulate all operator specific requirements in a good card and common details in the field, so when one individual changes to some other company, he just must change the credit card without changing the set-top package.

When asked where would the development of the new boxes will need a place, he said, “It’ll be an integral part of Make in India.”

We be prepared to conclude this problem within the next 5-6 weeks and preferably, people can utilize this service by next calendar year, he said. Although finalization of the problem is reliant on many factors, he added.

Dish Television set, Bharti Airtel, Tata Sky, Reliance Group, Videocon and Sunlight Direct will be the major players in DTH (direct-to-home) space.

A pre-consultation newspaper on set-top field interoperability was previously presented by Trai in Feb 2016.
